O-iO Swiss Classic Award 2021e

Intro
O-iO always takes place on Whitsun weekend. On Saturday in Sarnen, the capital of the canton of Obwalden. Around 550 classic cars come each time. There is no room for any more. On Sunday, more than 400 oldtimers go on an excursion to a place of interest. Getting them all there safely is a logistical challenge. In 2020 and 21, O-iO had to be canceled because of the pandemic.

SCA and O-iO
On 7 September, I received an email saying that O-iO had been nominated in the Door Opener category (scroll down), which surprised me. I had not applied for it. But since that’s the case, may I mention four reasons that could speak for O-iO as the winner of this category?

1) O-iO the Vintage car Folk Festival
O-iO  undertakes EVERYTHING to inspire the „people“ -whose goodwill we urgently need, especially in the future- for our hobby. The thousands of spectators – including many kids – enjoy free entry.

Yes, I also think that the „people“ are important for our scene and therefore vote for O-iO:

2) O-iO and Kids
O-iO is already involved with kids!
There will be another soapbox race at O-iO 2022. The race is the culmination of the joint project „Schule macht Handwerk“ (school makes crafts) of the municipality, the trade, and the school of Sarnen. To encourage young people to take up a crafts apprenticeship. Where else is there such a program? Where so many young people elsewhere are tempted to skip school for climate strikes? And to be against cars.

3) O-iO O-iO and Ladies in the Classic Car Scene
Excerpt from the Swiss Classic Car Award:
…. „In this context, the door opener pays special tribute to the achievements in promoting women in the scene.“

Ruedi Müller, O-iO organizer, had this idea 10 years ago. Claudia Müller implemented it as the first president. Uschi Bachmann now leads the group of 75 ladies!
Yes, I also think women belong behind the wheel of vintage cars, and therefore, I vote for O-iO.

4) Classic cars and culture
Our scene is fighting recognition as a cultural asset. On Saturday, 8 June 2019, Ruedi Mueller received the „Cultural Promotion Award“ for 20 years of O-iO from the municipality of Sarnen. As the first award winner ever.

Yes, the cultural aspect is also important to me for our future, and therefore I vote for O-iO.
